The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) reports that millions of adults engage in gambling activities, with a significant percentage experiencing issues related to addiction. Self-exclusion programs like GAMSTOP are essential in providing a safety net for individuals who recognize their gambling habits as problematic.
What is GAMSTOP?
GAMSTOP is a free, voluntary service that allows individuals to self-exclude from all licensed online gambling sites in the UK. By registering with GAMSTOP, users can choose to exclude themselves for a minimum period of six months, one year, or five years. During this time, they will be prevented from accessing any gambling sites that are registered with the scheme.
How GAMSTOP Works
- Registration Process:
To use GAMSTOP, individuals must visit the GAMSTOP website and complete an online registration form. This process requires personal information, including name, address, date of birth, and email address. Users must provide accurate information to ensure the effectiveness of the self-exclusion.
- Exclusion Period:
Upon successful registration, users can select their desired exclusion period. The options are six months, one year, or five years. Once the chosen period is set, it cannot be altered until it expires, ensuring that users have a committed time frame for their self-exclusion.
- Implementation Across Gambling Sites:
GAMSTOP works with all online gambling operators licensed by the UKGC. Once a user registers, GAMSTOP notifies all participating operators, who are then required to enforce the self-exclusion.
