1. Gather the Right Materials

Before starting the packing process, it’s essential to gather the appropriate materials. High-quality packing supplies are crucial for protecting artwork and antiques during transit. Key materials include:

• Bubble Wrap: Provides cushioning and shock absorption.
• Acid-Free Tissue Paper: Ideal for wrapping delicate surfaces, preventing scratches and damage.
• Cardboard Boxes: Use sturdy, double-walled boxes for added protection.
• Foam Board or Cardboard Sheets: These can be used to create additional support and protection for flat artwork.
• Packing Tape: Strong tape is necessary for securing boxes and wrapping items.
• Marking Pens: For labeling boxes clearly to identify contents and handling instructions.

2. Preparing Artwork for Packing

When packing artwork, it’s essential to consider its type and material. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

• Remove Glass: If the artwork is framed under glass, carefully remove the glass to prevent shattering. Use painter’s tape to create an ‘X’ across the glass surface, minimizing shatter risk.
• Wrap the Artwork: Cover the front of the artwork with acid-free tissue paper, followed by bubble wrap. Ensure the bubble side is facing outward to absorb shocks.
• Secure the Wrap: Use packing tape to secure the bubble wrap, ensuring it is snug but not overly tight, which could cause damage.
• Use a Support Board: For larger pieces, place the wrapped artwork between two pieces of foam board or cardboard for additional rigidity.
• Boxing: Place the wrapped artwork in a box that is slightly larger than the piece to allow for additional cushioning. Fill any gaps with packing peanuts or crumpled paper to prevent movement.

3. Packing Antiques Safely

Antiques require special attention due to their often fragile and irreplaceable nature. Here are tips for packing antiques:

• Disassemble When Possible: If the antique can be disassembled (like furniture), do so to make packing easier and safer.
• Wrap Each Piece: Use bubble wrap or blankets to wrap each component individually, securing with tape.
• Use Custom Boxes: For uniquely shaped antiques, consider using custom boxes or crates for a snug fit.
• Cushioning: Fill the bottom of the box with packing peanuts or crumpled paper before placing the antique inside, and fill any remaining space to prevent movement.

4. Labeling and Handling

Once everything is packed, proper labeling is vital. Clearly mark boxes as “Fragile,” “This Side Up,” and label contents. During the moving process, handle these boxes with care, instructing movers or helpers to treat them with caution.
